Which machine and electrical products are affected – and what you should be aware of
The Indian government has once again amended two central regulations:
- Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR):
The previous start date of September 1, 2026 will no longer apply. The entry into force will be announced separately at a later date.
Officially, the obligation for BIS certification in accordance with OTR has been in place since August 2024; mandatory enforcement (for many machines and devices) should begin from September 2026 (see more information on BIS and QCO certifications).
- Electrical Equipment Quality Control Order (QCO):
At the same time, certification obligations under the Electrical Equipment Quality Control Order (QCO) for electrical equipment (e.g. low-voltage switchgear such as circuit breakers, contactors, emergency stop devices) will be postponed until further notice.
Only product categories that have already been included since November 2024 remain unchanged.
Which products are covered by the OTR?
The following products are subject to OTR – BIS certification (including assemblies and components):
- Pumps and liquid handling machines
- Compressors
- Machines for thermal processes (e.g. ovens, pickling or cladding machines)
- Centrifuges, filter or cleaning machines for liquids or gases
- Packaging machines (e.g. filling, sealing, labeling)
- Cranes, lifting and hoisting equipment
- Construction, earthmoving and mining machinery
- Textile machines such as looms and embroidery machines
- Metalworking tools, e.g. lathes and milling machines, grinding machines
- Machines for ceramics, stone or concrete
- Plastic and rubber machines
- Gearboxes, gear wheels, transmission elements, torque converters
- Three-phase machines (generators), transformers
- Diesel generators
- Power semiconductor circuits / converters (Power Semiconductor Converters)
- Switchgear and controlgear (switchgear, controlgear) also over 1000 V
Conclusion
Manufacturers of pumps, compressors, crane technology, packaging or textile machines and electrotechnical components should check whether their products fall under the OTR and take care of it. The postponement of the deadline provides a window of opportunity to prepare certification, risk analysis and documentation in peace.
